‘Moonlight’ Takes Home Best Original Screenplay at WGA

By

Barry Jenkins at WGA

As the road to the Oscars draws to a close, the Writer’s Guild had their awards ceremony yesterday. Moonlight won best original screenplay, which is a surprise after the film’s previous loss to Manchester by the Sea at BAFTA. Arrival won best-adapted screenplay. Film favorite La La Land didn’t win best original screenplay, but Oscar predictors suggest that musical screenplays are rarely awarded at the ceremony.

Moonlight‘s win is a huge indicator that the Academy-nominated film may also win best original screenplay at the Oscars. A majority of the Academy voters are affiliated with the guilds in the film industry. WGA is the last major award ceremony before the Oscars, which premieres on February 27.
